Beginning in the first two decades of this century and continuing throughout the Great Depression and World War II, the state played a key role in safeguarding and promoting the capitalist economy. With the U.S. entry into World War II, the United States embarked on the road to full recovery and thereby became a powerful force on the world scene, its economy rivaling that of Britain, France, Germany, and other mature capitalist states. In fact, with the devastation of Europe during World War II and the de facto defeat of the major European states at the conclusion of the war, the United States emerged as the leading imperial state among the rival powers dominating the world economy. The growth and expansion of U.S. transnational corporations in the postwar period thus corresponds to the rise to power and prominence of the United States in the postwar period.
